Royal
Botanic Gardens Melbourne
The following educational programs are offered by the Gardens:
Aboriginal Heritage Walk
Spirit - Connection - Land
The Aboriginal Heritage Walk provides visitors with a greater understanding
of, and respect for, the customs and rich heritage of the local BUNURONG
and WOIWURRUNG people.
The Aboriginal Resource Trail
The Gardens have more than 100 species of plants used by Aborigines
for food, medicines, dyes, fibre and fire making. Students explore
the Gardens to learn more about the important relationship Aborigines
have with the land and in particular how many of the plants are utilised
in different parts of Australia. Activities include trying bush food,
viewing Aboriginal artefacts from around Australia, making bark paintings
using traditional methods and using plant fibre to make string.
Footprints - A Children's Walk (City of Melbourne)
Walk, think and talk about Indigenous culture in the Queen Victoria
Gardens. This program is an initiative of the City of Melbourne in
conjunction with The Royal Botanic Gardens.
As we walk through the Queen Victoria Gardens we can imagine that
we are walking in the footprints of people who have walked here for
thousands of years. The walk encourages us to think about the Kulin
Nation people and recognise their continuing culture.
