Yarra Healing
Yarra Healing promotes the voices of local Indigenous people
of Melbourne and its surrounding areas. It gives expression to their
stories and to the growth of the Reconciliation movement, not only
in Melbourne but across the nation.
The Catholic Education Office Melbourne, as developers of this site,
believe that a reconciled Australia will only emerge when the unique
perspective of Indigenous people's understanding of culture, land
and spirituality is heard, received and celebrated. To this end Yarra
Healing is dedicated
Yarra Healing aims to advance the Reconciliation movement
through as much local material as possible. Teachers and students
will be introduced to the greater Melbourne area through the voices
of members of the Kulin Nation, the five Indigenous groups that cover
this area. For thousands of years these groups had annual gatherings
at various places along the Yarra River, including the ground upon
which the Melbourne Cricket Ground now exists and at the Bolin Bolin
Billabong at a place now known as Bulleen.
The website will first and foremost offer a cultural experience with
members of the Kulin Nation so that Melbourne students and teachers
who visit the site can identify the very land they occupy with some
of its original inhabitants. The close relationship between the Indigenous
people and the land will be highlighted.
